Maximum Off-Road offers rebuild services for the Borg Warner T-20 transmission. This trans is used in all Max ATVs as well as other older brands such as Attex, Hustler, and Swamp Fox. These T-20 pics are from a recent rebuild project from a late '70s Max IV. The previous owner used gear lube instead of the recommended ATF. Gear lube causes the band lining to separate from the bands. Metal on metal contact then causes extensive damage to the drums.
Set of four drums from the T-20. Two planetary (upper) and two ring gear (lower). Notice the deep groves caused by the bands.
Compare the bad planetary (left) to the good ring gear (right).
One band had enough lining left on it to save one of the four drums.
Inside of the non-clutch side of the T-20. A ring gear drum and planetary drum sit in the center with three gears in the middle. A band wraps each drum to control steering and driving. In the center is the output shaft to the sprocket surrounded by the shift collar. You can see the bands are bare metal in this trans.
Inside of the clutch side of the T-20. This is nearly identical to the other side except for the input shaft coming in from the clutch.
